Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single from Adam Lambert's second album, Trespassing. The mid tempo piano ballad was written by Claude Kelly and produced by Dr. Luke. The two hitmakers previously collaborated on Lambert's hit single "For Your Entertainment." It was released on December 20, 2011.
  • The song finds Lambert belting vocals about a lover who knows him better than he knows himself. "Cause if I wanted to go I would have gone by now/ But I really need you near me to/ Keep my mind off the edge," the gay glam rocker sings.
  • Lambert served as an executive producer on Trespassing, which he said takes his fans on, "an exciting journey through the past two years" of his life. The American Idol runner-up added, "It's been a transformative period and I really wanted to make music from what I've experienced. All these songs honestly explore the ups and downs of my reality."
  • Lambert explained the song's meaning to MTV News, saying it is, "about the relationship you have with yourself, between your dark and light side. It's about duality; it's about that balance and finding it and struggling to maintain it and what it means."

The singer added the song also deals with the insecurities that come with being in a relationship. "[It's about] that moment where you're like, 'I need you, I love you,' where you have to reassure your partner," he said, "No matter what kind of relationship, everybody can relate to that moment."
  • The video was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Ray Kay (Britney Spears, Lady Gaga,). It finds Lambert displaying both his good and bad sides, playing both a tortured rock star and a mellow writer. Kay and Lambert previously worked together on the "Whataya Want From Me" clip.
  • Alex Ghenea created the song's remix when he was just 15 after finding an a cappella recording online of Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper" and building a whole new track around it with Logic. His father, Serban Ghenea, one of the music industry's most in-demand studio engineers, recalled to Billboard: "I was like, 'Holy s--t, what are you doing?' He said, 'I'm just playing around.' I said, 'Here, listen to these songs and see if you can figure out how they make them and try to re-create it.' And so, he did a remix. I never explained how to do that, and never expected it."

They sent it over to Disney, which led to the Adam Lambert remix and opened the door for Alex doing loads of others. Since then, he has amassed a resumé of blockbuster credits with the likes of Ariana Grande ("Into You"), Blackbear ("Hot Girl Bummer") and Dove Cameron ("Boyfriend").
