Songfacts®:

  • Adele wrote this with Dan Wilson, the lead singer and principal songwriter in Semisonic, which had hits with "Secret Smile" and "Closing Time." Wilson, who co-wrote two other 21 tracks ("Someone Like You" and "One and Only"), also co-wrote the Dixie Chicks' hit "Not Ready To Make Nice," which won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.
  • Adele explained the song's meaning to The Sun: "You know when you forget why you loved someone? I was just thinking about how my entire body would just shiver if my ex touched me to say hello. It's sad when you can't remember why you loved someone."
  • Adele expanded on this song about a former flame in an interview with Spin magazine: "It's about how my skin would tingle any time he ever touched me," she said. "I'd wait by my phone going crazy 'cause he didn't text me back in 10 minutes. It's just like, 'I bet he doesn't remember why he loved me.'"
  • Adele found this the most challenging track to record for her 21 album. "It was sort of my attempt at a country song. It starts super duper tender and soft, which I'm not really into that," she admitted in her 73 Questions video for Vogue. "By the end, I'm wailing, which is way more my comfort zone."
