Songfacts®:

  • The Alessi Brothers were an American soft rock duo comprising identical twin brothers, Bill (Billy) Alessi and Bob (Bobby) Alessi. They were best known for their 1977 UK Top 10 hit "Oh Lori" and the 1984 track "Savin' the Day," which was recorded for the soundtrack to the film Ghostbusters.
  • This is the opening track of the brothers' debut album, Alessi. Billy Alessi wrote the song for a girl called Holly who he fell in love with after meeting her during a spring break in Palm Springs on the West Coast.

"It was the Riviera Hotel, and I remember she was there with her mother," he recalled to Genius. "I moved in on her and her mother and took them out to lunch. I ended up dating this very beautiful girl. I was head over heels. That's the way I am. I've got to be in love."
  • Billy invited Holly to join him on a trip up to the Bay Area city of Sausalito. It was there he wrote the song:

    San Francisco, Candlelight Harbor
It all comes back to me (those times)

The couple dated for six months but stayed in touch. When Holly called him in 2016, Billy told her she was the inspiration for the track. "She said, 'I had a feeling that was about us, because you were talking about Sausalito,'" he recalled. "That was real feelings."
  • A line from the song is sampled in the opening seconds of the xx's 2017 single "Say Something Loving."
