  • "My Kind" is a nostalgic look back at Alessia Cara's simple, normal life in Brampton, Ontario, before she found fame as the "Here" singer. She recalls "playing with Troll dolls to scare the kids away" and watching the animated TV show Yvon of the Yukon, about a "crass-humored" Frenchman.
  • Speaking in a track-by-track interview, Cara admitted that when she was young she longed to be a successful singer as she felt the routine of her then-life in Canada was not for her. However, now that she doesn't have that life anymore, "there's a little bit of longing for that back."

Cara added: "It's always like the grass is greener on the other side. It's a tough thing because I'm living my dream, and I'm living something that I never thought I'd be able to live, and I've been blessed with so many different things, and I've been able to bless my family with so many different things, which is beautiful. But then there also is a sense of like, longing for that bit of normalcy that I used to have and just the innocence of being a kid in general, regardless of my lifestyle, I'm an adult now with adult responsibilities."
  • Cara recalls during the song an incident when her shoes were stolen.

Jealous of your high tops 'cause someone stole mine
Wish somebody would've told me that would be alright.

The singer explained that being from Canada, she had a pair of both indoor and outdoor shoes. Her indoor shoes were "sick, hi-top Converse, like the classic hi-top Converse," which she loved. One day she went out, put on her outside shoes, put her Converse into their "little cubby thing" and when she came back, they were gone.

"I knew someone stole them, and I had a feeling who it was because there was this girl that I had a little bit of beef with - she didn't like me for whatever reason and she decided to steal my shoes," Cara said.

A couple of years later the thief returned the shoes by throwing them into her mailbox. "I won't say her name because we're cool now, she's a great person," she added.
