Songfacts®:

  • How Mercy Looks From Here is dedicated to Amy Grant's late mother, Gloria Grant, whose struggle with dementia and subsequent death inspired many of the album's lyrics. However, several of the songs were written long before she passed away. This personal ballad, for instance, came from an experience that Grant witnessed, that began over 20 years before the release of the album. Amy bought a farm in 1988 and planted a number of trees that remained barren for many years, Eventually, she returned back to the property to find the trees abundant with fruit. Amy told us: "Maybe the reason I attribute the direction of this song to my mother is because of all the songs that I have written or been a part of, it felt like a dozen or so of the songs came together in such an honest but life-affirming way."
