Songfacts®:

  • Amy Grant duets with her future husband Vince Gill on "House Of Love," which is kind of an odd song. It's about a guy who makes a run for it but then comes back home, knowing the lights are still on in the house of love. There aren't many details, and they don't seem to matter. The song is driven by Grant and Gill's star power, and the idea of an enduring love that will weather any storm.
  • Amy Grant and Vince Gill weren't a couple when they recorded this song, but they certainly had plenty of romantic chemistry. They met at the end of 1993 when they sang together on Gill's Christmas special broadcast on The Nashville Network (TNN). They were both married but they stayed in touch and got together in 1994 for this duet, which looking back was a portent of their eventual marriage in 2000. They both later admitted that as soon as they met they fell for each other, but claimed they didn't act on it until they were both divorced. After they got married they did more duets, starting with "When I Look into Your Heart" from Gill's 2000 album Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye.
  • "House Of Love" is the title track to Amy Grant's 11th album, released in 1994. Her first five albums were in the Contemporary Christian milieu, but she started putting out some pop songs in 1985 and a year later had a #1 duet with Peter Cetera, "The Next Time I Fall." Her 10th album, Heart In Motion in 1991, was pure pop and packed with hits. Grant ruled the airwaves with songs like "That's What Love Is For," "Every Heartbeat," and the #1 pop hit "Baby Baby." Many listeners didn't even know she was a CCM superstar.

She stayed in the pop lane for the House Of Love album. The title track was the biggest hit, charting at #37. It was also the first Top 40 pop hit for Vince Gill.
  • The song was written by three Nashville writers: Greg Barnhill, Kenny Greenberg and Wally Wilson. Barnhill's credits include "She's Taken A Shine" by John Berry and "Never Been Kissed" by Sherrie Austin. Greenberg co-wrote "Little Good-Byes" by SheDaisy. Wilson had a hand in "In Another World" by Joe Diffie.
  • About a month after it was released on Amy Grant's 1994 album, "House Of Love" appeared in the 1994 movie Speechless, a forgettable romantic comedy starring Michael Keaton and Geena Davis. It plays under the end credits of the film.
  • The first video for this song is black and white, with composite images of Gill and Grant, who don't interact. It gets kind of literal, with Grant sitting on a house. Another video was made that intercuts footage of the movie Speechless with scenes of Gill and Grant singing together in a studio. They're clearly enjoying each other's company, raising speculation that they were getting romantic. This wasn't the first time Grant got cozy with a guy who wasn't her husband in a music video - in her "Baby Baby" video she larks about with an actor. That didn't go over well with some of her fans.
