Songfacts®:

  • Nothing to do with the Athens, Georgia rock band, this song is a sweet, swoony number about a boy that Ariana Grande meets in her dreams, who become reality. The title, which doesn't appear in the lyrics, refers to rapid eye movement sleep in which vivid dreams occur. Grande has said the story behind the song is "dreaming someone into your life."
  • The song is built around an unreleased Beyoncé track produced by Pharrell Williams. "It's an entirely new song now, but the hook was so dreamy it had to find a home," Ariana wrote on Twitter.
  • Ariana Grande's fiancé, Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, is credited with supplying additional vocals.
