Songfacts®:

  • This song finds a pensive Ariana Grande tripping over a new love interest and jumping into a relationship. The singer has been hurt in the past, but the rush is too exhilarating to ignore. She's giving this new relationship a try, even though there's no "safety net" and she might end up getting hurt.
  • Ty Dolla $ign joins Grande halfway through, crooning a verse where he encourages Grande to let her guard down and commit herself to the relationship. This is the first collaboration between the pair.
  • Grande wrote much of Positions in the early months of her relationship with real estate agent Dalton Gomez, and many of the tracks appear to have been inspired by their romance. Both this song and "Motive" seem to reflect her concerns about committing herself to another lover after previous heartbreaks.
  • The song title was initially leaked in early October 2020 under the different title of "No Remedy."
  • Grande and Ty Dolla $ign wrote the song with its producers. They are:

Grande's regular producer Tommy "TBHits" Brown, who has worked with her since her debut album, Yours Truly.

The Rascals, who comprise Grande's former Victorious co-star Leon Thomas III and his partner Khris Riddick-Tynes. As well as working with Ariana from her Yours Truly album, they've also penned songs with Ella Mai ("Not Another Love Song") and Rick Ross ("Gold Roses").

Newcomer Keys Open Doors, for whom this is his first credit with a major artist.
