Songfacts®:

  • Avril Lavigne wrote this with Evan David Taubenfeld, who was Lavigne's lead guitarist for two and a half years until September 2004 and is the lead singer of The Black List Club. Apart from "Hot," Taubenfield also co-wrote "Innocence," "One of Those Girls" and "Contagious" on The Best Damn Thing album. He said in a Q and A on The Black List Club website that "Hot" and "Innocence" are his personal favorites on the album.
  • The video was shot at The Beacon in Jersey City, which has previously been used as a location for several movies including Annie and Quiz Show.
  • This was one of Lavigne's weakest performing single releases. In the US it's #95 placing was her second worst after "Fall To Pieces," which was her first release not to reach the Hot 100. The song performed best in her home country, Canada, where it peaked at #10 and in South America (#4 in Argentina, #8 in Chile).

  • Brendan from Dublin, Irelandi do find it hard to say to my friends that i love avril's music, not considered the most em boyish thing to like,ah well she's f--king ridiculously talented and her band rocks
  • Mauia88 from Orange County, CaThe lyrics of the song "Hot" follow the emotional roller coaster brought on by a girl who has feelings for a boy with whom her friends say she shouldn't. The first verse is her admitting to herself what she feels in an almost diary-candid style. She secretly admits to wanting to lock him up in her closet "when no one's around." To secretly "put his hand in her pocket." To kiss him "without a sound." She then decides that the opinion of others doesn't matter to her, and proceeds to declare "I want to stay this way forever, and I'll say it loud!" She professes that he's in her head (and heart) and it's too late for him to get out.

During the song's bridge, Lavigne candidly reveals her raw feelings - not about sex and him making her "hot", but about his love & kiss.
