Songfacts®:

  • This ballad was written by Curtis Mayfield and originally recorded by him for the soundtrack of the 1972 movie Super Fly. The song featured in the film's love scene and was later sampled by Mary J Blige for her 1994 album track "I'm the Only Woman."
  • Barbara Mason covered this around the same time as Mayfield's recording. She explained to Mojo magazine October 2008: "I'd first heard Curtis in my early teens, it was always The Impressions that caught my attention. It was the way that Curtis wrote melodies, they were beautiful but intense, and the lyrics had universal messages but spoke of love too. I first met him when I was touring with him in 1966. I was so in awe, I told him how much I had loved him as a child and how influenced I was by him. The idea to work with him, came when my manager and I went to see Super Fly at the cinema. I flew to Chicago, he gave me 'Give Me Your Love' and within half an hour we'd recorded it."
