  • On August 15, 2012, the German-registered coach in which Baroness were traveling fell off the road near Bath, England. Nine passengers were injured including lead singer John Baizley; his left arm was shattered and left leg broken. The traumatic event part-inspired this droning piano-led track in which Baizley cries:

    I'm scared to be alone
Every aching joint breaking at the bone
I'd do anything to feel like I'm alive again

Though the song wasn't entirely written about the crash, Baizley does admit the event is part of it. "It would be absolutely preposterous for me to assert that I'm not still struggling with that and that isn't something I'm still working through in the music," he explained to NME. "But it's also hard for me to say that's all it's about – it wouldn't be fair to the band because they weren't a part of that experience and they are a part of the experience of this music."
  • Baizley wrote the song with guitarist Gina Gleason during one of the band's recording sessions with producer Dave Fridmann. Baizley told Kerrang Gleason "was singing the lead initially, and something about it wasn't quite synching."

The pair decided to try swapping parts with Baizley singing the main melody and Gleason singing the harmony. "All of a sudden it just got bigger and louder and the depth just increase," he said.
