Songfacts®:

  • When the Bee Gees made songs for the Saturday Night Fever movie in 1977, many of them were about dancing, as the film centered around the nightclub scene, but most of their hits before and after had to do with matters of the heart. In "Love You Inside Out," they're pleading to a lover, letting her know that her cheating is ripping them apart. It shouldn't be so bad, but they fall in love hard, backwards and forwards with their hearts hanging out.
  • This song came at the end of a phenomenal run of hits for the Bee Gees. It went to #1 in America on June 9, 1979 as disco was facing a backlash. Bee Gees songs had inundated the airwaves over the previous year; not just their own, but songs they wrote for others, like "Shadow Dancing" for their brother, Andy Gibb. "Love You Inside Out" was the nexus where sentiment turned against them. Their next songs struggled to get airplay and ranked low on the charts. After the reckoning, they reinvented themselves by writing songs for other artists that were still welcome on radio.
  • Some of the chart milestones for this song:

It was the Bee Gees' sixth consecutive American #1, which at the time equaled The Beatles record. It was also the ninth American chart topper for the group, at the time tying them with Paul McCartney for fourth place on the list of artists with the most #1s. The Top 3 at the time were: The Beatles (20), Elvis Presley (17), and Diana Ross & The Supremes (12).

It was the third consecutive #1 pulled from the Spirits Having Flown album. As their previous album, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, also had three consecutive #1 singles, the Bee Gees became the first act to pull three consecutive #1 singles from each of two successive albums. "Love You Inside Out" was also their fifth single to sell over 2 million copies.
  • This was sampled in 1996 by R&B group Total on "When Boy Meets Girl," which peaked at #50 in the US. It was also sampled on R. Kelly and Jay-Z's 2002 single "Honey," which charted at #35 in the UK. Two years later, Snoop Dogg sampled it for his rap single "Ups And Downs," which reached #36 in the UK.

  • Michael From Nc from NcThey did perform it live. Saw the show as a kid.
  • Isabella from ChicagoI believe this is one of the only hits The Bee Gees never performed live! One of their most underrated songs for sure
  • Markantney from Biloxi, MsJul2014,
Ron, the song got props from the HipHop/Rap Community, it's been sampled a few times, once by JZ.

And I agree (on being underrated), my son even likes it. He asked a followup about the group; I had to tell him the Nuclear Winter after the Disco (Nuke) Bomb went off and almost destroyed their careers but they gave it a good fight.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn April 15th 1979, "Love You Inside Out" by the Bee Gees entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #37; and on June 3rd it peaked at #1 (for 1 week) and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100...
It was preceded and then succeeded at #1 by the same record, "Hot Stuff", by Donna Summer...
As already stated, it was the trio's sixth consecutive #1 record; "He's A Liar" ended the streak, it peaked at #30 on the Top 100...
    R.I.P. Maurice (1949 - 2003), Robin (1949 - 2012), Ms. Summer (1948 - 2012) and Barry Gibb will celebrate his 68th birthday this coming September 1st.
  • George from Belleville, NjThis is one of the most intense love songs ever recorded.Certainly one of the BeeGees best songs. This song grooves, has a good tempo, great melody, excellent harmony.A very catchy hit tune. Everytime I hear it,it moves me.
  • Ron from Auburndale, FlPossible THE most underrated Bee Gees song ever! It was their last number one, for crying out loud, and it NEVER gets played. Haven't heard it on the radio since I was a kid. The section of the song from about 2:21 to about 3:02 is pure gold...
  • David from Youngstown, OhThe falsetto is at its strongest on this song, particularly "Don't try to tell me it's all over
    I can't hear a word I can't hear a line
No man could love you more
And that's what I'm cryin' for
You can't change the way I feel inside."
  • Showing from San Francisco, CaReally dig the Feist version of this song too.
  • Kevin from Reading , PaNot really that memorable of a hit for them, but at the time, they just kept churnin' out the Number One's.
