Songfacts®:

  • "Green Honda" is an experimental dance track titled after Benee's first ride, a 2000 Honda Integra. In this raw song, she's totally living her best life and giving her ex the ultimate "screw you."
  • The lyrics are straight-up savage, with Benee venting her rage at this loser who was just a waste of her time and one of her biggest mistakes.

And now I pull up in my green Honda
To tell you that I don't want ya

There's quite a history to Benee's "Green Honda."

"It was my first car given to me by my nana when she gave up driving," she told Apple Music. "I call her 'Steve' and she's on the cover of my Stella & Steve EP - we've had lots of adventures together."

"This was quite a lighthearted song at first and some parts just flowed," Benee added. "It's about knowing where you're at and what you need to say and not being afraid anymore."
  • Benee teamed up with two producers in LA to create "Green Honda" - Elvira Anderfjard from MXM Music (who's worked with Tove Lo, Ed Sheeran, and Taylor Swift) and Luka Kloser (who's produced for Jojo Siwa and Dylan Conrique). The whole studio was full of women, which was a first for Benee, and she was stoked about it.
  • The songwriting session kicked off with the line, "I pull up in my green Honda to tell ya that I don't want ya." When Benee heard it, she immediately recognized it was a hook she wanted to build the song around.
  • Benee tapped into the crazy new energy she found working with her female collaborators. Writing "Green Honda" flowed so effortlessly. At first, it was lighthearted, but then Benee decided to inject some serious girl power into the mix as the New Zealand alt-pop queen felt the song should be all about speaking your truth and not caring.

After the session, Benee had to hit the road for her European tour but continued working with Elvira and Luka to perfect the production.
  • Towards the end of her 2022 US tour, Benee started adding "Green Honda" to her setlist. She released it as a single on February 8, 2023.
  • Eliot Charof and AA directed the song's music video, filming it in a junkyard in Lancaster, California. It shows Benee and her crew tearing it up in a neon-drenched, bubblegum electro world full of cars, dogs, and insane fashion.
