Songfacts®:

  • Here, Beyoncé sings of a night of intimacy with her husband, Jay-Z. She's a "seasonal professional" and promises her hubby the sex will be erotic, exotic and they'll get as high as spaceships.
  • Come and cuff it, cuff it, cuff it, cuff it, baby
While I buss it, buss it, buss it for you, baby

To "cuff it" means to take ownership of something, based on the idea of getting "handcuffed" to a partner. An alternative definition is to hit them quickly and lightly with the palm of your hand. Beyoncé is handing over the reins to Jay-Z and letting him take control of their lovemaking. Meanwhile, Beyoncé will turn him on when she "buss it" (dances in an uninhibited manner).
  • Beyonce interpolates blue-eyed soul singer Teena Marie's 1988 single "Ooo La La La" on the pre-chorus when she sings "ooo la-la-la-la-la-la." The Fugees borrowed the same lyric for their 1995 hit "Fu-Gee-La."
  • Beyoncé wrote "Cuff It" with:

Chic songwriter and guitarist Nile Rodgers.

Raphael Saadiq, co-founder of the pioneering R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! He executive produced Beyoncé's sister Solange's 2016 album A Seat At The Table.

The songwriting/production duo Nova Wav, comprising Brittany "Chi" Coney and Denisia "Blu June" Andrews. They worked on half of the Renaissance tracks.

Frequent Beyoncé songwriting partner, The-Dream. He contributed towards 14 out of Renaissance's 16 tracks.

Former Lukas Graham keyboardist Morten "Rissi" Ristorp. He co-penned many of the Danish band's early hits, including the singles "7 Years" and "Love Someone." He's also crafted hits for Little Mix ("Sweet Melody")" and Kygo ("Lose Somebody").

Allen McGrier and Teena Marie, the writers of "Ooo La La La," also get credited.
  • Beyoncé, Nova Wav, Raphael Saadiq, Rissi and The-Dream produced the track. Nile Rodgers also provided the guitar work; The-Dream played the synthesizer; and Raphael Saadiq was on clavichord, drums and bass (the bass line recalls Chic's "Good Times").
  • The other musicians are:

    Trumpet: Jamelle Adisa
    Trombone: Lemar Guillary
    Saxophone: Scott Mayo
    Piano: Daniel Crawford
    Percussion: Sheila E.
    Additional vocals: Beam

Shelia E. was in Prince's band from 1984 to 1989 and played on Beyoncé's 2002 song "Work It Out." Jamaican-American singer-rapper Beam also gets credited as a featured artist on the Renaissance track "Energy."
  • Two months after the release of Renaissance, "Cuff It" began to trend on social media, leading to a spike in streams on Spotify. This resulted in the song re-entering charts worldwide.
  • "Cuff It" won for Best R&B Song at the Grammy Awards in 2023, tying Beyoncé for most wins all-time (31) with the conductor Georg Solti. She was late to the arena and wasn't able to accept the award, so Nile Rodgers gave the acceptance speech. He was visibly moved, saying, "When I got called to play on this song, it was the most organic thing that ever happened to me. I heard the song and said, 'I want to play on that right now.' It was one take. I never even got, 'Well, Nile, maybe you should do this...' It was what I felt in my heart."

Later in the show, Beyoncé was on hand when she broke the record with a win for Best Dance/Electronic Album with Renaissance. Beyoncé also made history as the first Black woman to win the best dance/electronic album Grammy.
  • NME named "Cuff It" their Best Song of 2022. They said: "With a bridge bigger than the Golden Gate, slinky strings, NSFW saucy lyrics, and the disco flare that a Nile Rodgers assist always brings, 'Cuff It' is total ecstasy and an unexpected gift to the pop canon of all time, let alone 2022."
  • On February 3, 2023, Beyoncé released a "Wetter Remix" of the song, mashing up the instrumental of Twista's 2009 single "Wetter" with "Cuff It," adding new vocals and lyrics. The remix first surfaced as a bedroom-ready mashup by DJ Esentrik that gained popularity on TikTok. Inspired, Bey got back into the studio and laid down the slower and sensual remix.
  • "Cuff It" became the longest-charting hit on the Hot 100 of Beyonce's solo career, totaling 35 weeks on the ranking. It surpassed the 33 weeks that her Lady Gaga collaboration "Telephone" logged in 2009-'10.
