Songfacts®:

  • This was the eighth US single release from Beyoncé's third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce.
  • This sexy number was co-produced and co-written by Shondrae "Bangladesh" Crawford who also helmed "A Milli" for Lil Wayne. Beyoncé, her cousin Angela Beyince and songwriter/producer Sean Garrett also have songwriting credits.
  • This song depicts Beyoncé's sexpot alter ego Sasha Fierce as an amateur pornographer delighted to be filmed explicitly for somebody's video phone.
  • Lady Gaga stars along with Beyoncé in the song's music video, directed by Hype Williams. In an interview with New York's Z100 radio station before the video was released, the "Poker Face" singer explained: "When I was doing her video with her, she called me and she said, 'What do you want to do?' And I'm like, 'I don't want to show up in some frickin' hair bow and be fashion Gaga in your video.' I said, 'I want to do you.'"
  • Gaga had nothing but praise for Beyoncé when MTV News asked her about their collaboration. "You know she is such a beautiful person, and I gotta tell you, I just adore her," she said. "I had kind of lost faith a little bit in meeting artists in the business - and then I met Beyoncé." Gaga added that two had a lot of fun together. "She is a real, real woman," she said. "I have never laughed so hard on a video set in my life. We had the best time doing 'Video Phone.' "
  • Underwear manufacturer Triumph successfully sued Beyoncé's record company Sony over claims that the lingerie worn by the Halo singer in this song's video was ripped off from a set created for them by Bulgarian designer Iskren Lozanov. Sony disputed the claim, saying that Beyoncé's outfit had in fact been inspired by the art of Pablo Picasso and not Triumph's products. However, the judge ruled that because Lozanov's design was so distinct that coincidence was unlikely, and therefore ruled in Triumph's favor.
