Songfacts®:

  • This song became the band's biggest hit to date, principally as it was a one-off release, well ahead of the accompanying album. The band recorded it in advance as they were unwilling to wait another year to release it.
  • The song was originally entitled "Teeth or Mountains."
  • The Scottish trio first played this live in Spain, in June 2008.
  • This was produced by LA producer Garth Richardson, who helmed the band's previous album Puzzle. He is nicknamed "GGGarth" Richardson because he has a stammer.
  • The band's songwriter Simon Neil told the Scotsman June 29, 2008 that this epic rock song was influenced by the loss of his mother. She died at the tragically early age of 52, while the band were recording Puzzle. He explained: "This song is about life after Puzzle, and trying to build things up after going through a rough time. Out of the worst times I could ever possibly have in my life came the most amazing time with the band. And it made me realize I wanted to marry my girlfriend."
  • The song's video was filmed in a Masonic temple, near Liverpool Street Station in East London. The location was chosen because of the black and white marble check floor.
