Songfacts®:

  • Broonzy made a recording of this uptempo guitar instrumental in the 1950s but it was actually the first composition he ever recorded. Broonzy was born in Arkansas and arrived in Chicago shortly after the First World War along with countless other blacks from the Deep South, many of them musicians. He is said to have recorded this first in 1925 although it was not cut until 1927, and according to the man himself, earned him not a cent in royalties. It was released on the Paramount label as Big Bill and Thomps, the latter being second guitarist John Thomas. >>>
