Songfacts®:

  • Billie Eilish closes Happier Than Ever with this melancholic acoustic ballad where she tries to move on from a recent heartbreak by distracting herself with pornography. This leads her to ponder how porn objectifies women and propagates a male fantasy that has nothing to do with true love. Eilish then reflects on whether genuine love lasts forever. She explained to Spotify: "'Male Fantasy' is really a hopeless realization and a horrible thing. It's terrible to feel something that you don't want to feel."
  • Eilish co-wrote all the Happier Than Ever tracks with her brother/producer Finneas. Speaking to Rolling Stone about writing such sexual songs with her sibling, she said it wasn't a problem because they're both very open about their lives. "It's just fun. It's songwriting and it's storytelling," Eilish added. "We just have to think about the art of it and not think too hard about [the lyrics]."
  • Eilish originally planned on closing Happier Than Ever with the furious title track where she rages at her boyfriend's faults. Once she and Finneas wrote "Male Fantasy" they felt it better to close it with that song rather than finishing the album on an angry note.
  • Self-directed and edited by Eilish, the somber video focuses on the singer in various rooms of a house as she tries to get over a breakup.
  • Finneas joined Billie Eilish for an acoustic rendition of this song on the December 11, 2021 episode of Saturday Night Live. It marked the second time she'd been the musical performer on the sketch show.
