Songfacts®:

  • In "I Wish I Was A Shooting Star," Birdy captures the yearning of an underappreciated genius, burning bright yet unseen.

So, tell me how I'm meant to feel
I'm dying to get out of here
    I wish I was a shooting star
I'd burn out as the world admired

Birdy told The Sun: "The song is about someone who feels invisible, like the world is against them and they just want to break through and be heard."
  • Birdy recorded "I Wish I Was a Shooting Star" for her 2023 album Portraits. The record saw the singer ditch her indie-folk sound for '80s-infused synthpop, inspired by icons like Kate Bush, David Bowie, and Madonna.

"I Wish I Was a Shooting Star" was inspired by Bowie. "I grew up listening to David Bowie so he's always been an influence but particularly on this record I was inspired by all his different eras," Birdy told The Sun. "The production has a bit of a Bowie and the Pixies feeling to me."
  • Birdy wrote and produced "I Wish I Was A Shooting Star" in Nashville with Gabe Simon (Lana Del Rey's "Blue Banisters," Jessie Murph's "Pray," Noah Kahan's "Stick Season").
