Songfacts®:

  • Birdy is British singer-songwriter Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, who was 14 when she recorded this song. After she won the under-18s category of the UK talent contest UK Idol at the age of 12, Jasmine was quickly offered a publishing contract by Good Soldier Songs Ltd, run by Christian Tattersfield, chairman of Warner Bros. Music UK. This is her debut single, a cover version of a track first recorded by American folk band Bon Iver and included on their 2008 album For Emma, Forever Ago.
  • A piece of trivia for you movie buffs - Birdy's great uncle was the actor Sir Dirk Bogarde.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in January 2012 after soundtracking Hollyoaks actress Jorgie Porter on ITV1's Dancing on Ice.
  • This is the first Birdy video directed by Sophie Muller, who would go on to direct the singer's "Wings" and "Words as Weapons." The clip follows Birdy through a crumbling mansion. Two other videos were also made. The first is a simple black-and-white take of her singing to the camera; the second shows her performing in a decrepit room that's covered in graffiti.
