Songfacts®:

  • The rockers Black Stone Cherry emerged from the depths of the pandemic in the summer of 2020 with "Again," a song that finds them rising from ashes every time they die. The band said it's about "the inner spirit that human beings have to be able to overcome and stand back up and climb back up that ladder no matter what's going on." >>

  • The song was written entirely in the studio. It dates back to the sessions for their 2008 album Folklore And Superstition, when they started working on it but didn't complete it. When they started working on their album The Human Condition, they revisited the song, keeping the original bridge but re-writing everything else. This time, it came together quickly, indicating they had something special.
  • The lyrics reference the story of the phoenix, a mythological bird that is continually reborn from its own ashes. They got the idea when someone in the band threw out the line "wings of fire."
  • Black Stone Cherry were able to record the song and make the video pre-pandemic, but by the time the song was released, they were in lockdown and couldn't tour. In December 2020, they released a live video from Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, recorded in the empty theater due to COVID restrictions.
