Songfacts®:

  • "That song is 100 percent what you think it's about," Blackstone Cherry lead singer Chris Robertson told Songfacts.

    We think it's about marijuana:

Fire it up just to burn it down
    It don't come any cheaper
    And nothin' taste sweeter
  • "Mary Jane" is a popular nickname for marijuana. Other artists who have written odes to the herb with that name in the title include Rick James and Lady Gaga.
  • The song started with a guitar riff and came together when they decided to have the vocal follow the guitar. One of the band members started singing, "Me and Mary Jane, da da da da da da," which gave them the title and lyrical direction.
  • Yeah we're wilder than some mustangs
Got the top down and Skynyrd up

Like many southern rock bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a huge influence on Black Stone Cherry.
  • The smoky video was directed by Mason Dixon, whose credits include "The One That Got Away" by Jake Owen, "Tonight Looks Good On You" for Jason Aldean, and "Whiskey" for Jana Kramer. It proved very popular on YouTube, quickly racking up millions of views.
