Songfacts®:

  • The catchphrase "hot girl summer" was first used by Megan Thee Stallion on social media in April 2018. The expression, a call to live your life in a confident and unapologetic way, went viral the following year and became a meme. This song is blackbear's spin on the "#hotgirlsummer" trend.
  • The Pennsylvania-born rapper told Genius that when he kept seeing the "#hotgirlsummer" hashtag, he decided to record a response to the trend. "Personally. I was having a hot girl bummer," blackbear explained, "so I wanted to make a song just for the people that weren't really out there posing in their bikinis."
  • The song title was interpreted by both the media and Megan Thee Stallion's fans as a play on the rapper's hit single "Hot Girl Summer." However, blackbear actually previewed his song on social media in late July before "Hot Girl Summer" was released on August 9, 2019.
  • Blackbear co-produced the song along with FRND, aka former The Friday Night Boys vocalist Andrew Goldstein. As well as co-helming blackbear's breakthrough hit "Do re mi," FRND's other credits include hit tunes by Hot Chelle Rae ("I Like It Like That"), MKTO ("Classic") and 5 Seconds of Summer ("Want You Back").
  • Blackbear explained to Apple Music the song is a satirical poke at what it's like to go out nowadays and be around people in their 20s. "The whole idea is I'm out in Hollywood, I'm at a club, I'm in the corner, and this kind of sucks," he said. "Personally, I don't drink. I'm drinking my Red Bull, so it's even more boring for me."
  • Blackbear made this song and the Everything Means Nothing tracks "Me & Ur Ghost" and "Queen of Broken Hearts" over the course of three days.
