Going To The Faire

Album: Nature's Light (2021)

Songfacts®:

  • Blackmore's Night, led by Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night, are the foremost band in Renaissance music, but do they really put on their tunics and head to the faires? They sure do.

"We're so inspired, not only by nature and by folklore, but by these Renaissance faires that we go to," Night told Songfacts. "It's truly an escape from stresses and pressures of today."

The song describes the excitement the faire, the dancing, music, and escape into fantasy.

"It brings you back to the childlike innocence of wonder and awe and just enjoying yourself, just for the sake of that moment," Night adds. "And looking through the veil and seeing gypsies dancing and minstrels, and Ritchie goes right to the mead tent. We were lucky to have our children, Autumn and Rory, singing the backing vocals at the end. It adds to the childlike wonder and innocence we all experience while going to these faires."

Says Blackmore, "It is an escape."
  • The music is based on a piece by the 16th-Century Renaissance music composer Tielman Susato, which Richie Blackmore heard on the 1993 album Dansereye, a collection of Susato's songs performed by the New London Consort. Blackmore did the arrangement and Candice Night wrote the lyric.
  • With images of wildflowers and skipping through the fields of green, this song fits the theme of the Nature's Light album, which is "the simplicity and magic of everyday miracles." It's the 11th album from the band, which formed in 1997.
