Songfacts®:

  • Running to 5 minutes 23 seconds, "Spanish Nights" is the 11th track on the 1999 album Under A Violet Moon; it has lyrics by Candice Night.

In an early interview with the Blackmore's Night German Fan Club, Ritchie said "Spanish Nights" is "an old riff I used to play when I was 13."

A "Malagueña" is actually an entire genre of music, and there are a number of songs and instrumentals with that name. Ritchie studied classical guitar as a boy before going electric, and there is at least one "Malagueña" suitable for grade 1.

In the interview, he continued, "I just thought that it would be fun to extemporize on that particular riff. I originally wrote the song in the key of E to have the open notes. However, Candy's range in actually in the key of A so we compromised and went to F sharp with a capodastro." >>>
