Songfacts®:

  • This song describes a real incident that took place at a used clothing store on Melrose Avenue where Blind Melon guitarist Christopher Thorn used to work. His co-worker, William, was going through withdrawal trying to kick heroin. That day, lead singer Shannon Hoon came by the store and saw the whole thing - it was the first time either of them had seen someone kicking heroin.

Thorn and Hoon each had their own bouts with heroin; a drug overdose led to Hoon's death in 1995 at age 28.
  • The song title is a reference to how William didn't drive - he would call friends to drive him to downtown Los Angeles to score heroin.
