Just As I Am

Album: Just as I Am (2015)

Songfacts®:

  • Brantley Gilbert battled with alcohol for a long time before putting a stop to his drinking in December 2011. He told Taste of Country this song is about his efforts to overcome the demon drink. "I was in a lot of fights, but nothing like this," he said. "That one was trying to kill me. This one is definitely about the most intense and most deadly struggle I had in my entire life."

"The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is when people that do drink, don't drink around me," Gilbert continued. "My fiancée likes to have a glass of wine every now and then. Or she'll drink a beer watching a ball game or a fight or whatever. And she knows the same thing."

"I've told her, 'You know how to drink one and just put it down. I can't. If I have one, it's gonna be downhill," he added. "We gonna go fight somebody and I'm probably gonna wake up naked on some beach I've never been to.'"
  • The song wasn't included on the 2014 original version of Just as I Am, but was added to the Platinum version of the album, which was released the following year.
