Songfacts®:

  • "Over When We're Sober" is a country rocker that tells the story of a fiery romance that only ignites in the presence of alcohol. Brantley Gilbert and Ashley Cooke can't keep their hands off each other when the whiskey's flowing, but the minute they sober up, it's splitsville again.
  • Gilbert, along with his producer Brock Berryhill and songwriter Justin Wilson ("Drunk Me," "Momma's House") penned the tune with country star Jelly Roll during a songwriting weekend at Lee Brice's farm.
  • Wanting to make the song a duet, Gilbert began to search for the right partner.

"There were a few of them, this one included, where nobody wants to see me and Jelly Roll sing together," Gilbert joked with Taste Of Country Nights.

When Berryhill suggested Ashley Cooke, Gilbert remembered being blown away by her energy and talent at a show a few months prior. Turns out, Ashley's been a Gilbert fan for years, so when he called about the duet, it was a no-brainer for her.

"When Brantley called me about this song, I listened to the demo and it was an immediate yes," she said. "I've been a fan for truly so long – in fact, my Christmas present from a college boyfriend one year was a road trip to Atlanta just to see BG's show."
  • "Over When We're Sober" was released as a single on June 20, 2024. The only other time Gilbert released a male/female duet to country radio was his team-up with Lindsey Ell, "What Happens in a Small Town." It tore up the charts, topping Billboard's Country Airplay listing and boosting Ell's career.
