Songfacts®:

  • Brocarde is a "supernatural influencer" who does some ghost hunting when she's not making music. She's very attuned to the paranormal, which is where this song came from. She told the story to Songfacts:

"When I wrote 'Identity Theft' I was sitting in a dark room, reflecting on my life and analyzing my journey to embracing my true self. As I sat, silently, I was instantly taken back to birth. I was alive in the notion of being reborn. Instantly in my head I could hear the sound of a crying baby and I knew the song had to start in the delivery room, symbolizing the start of life.

As an artist my true passion is storytelling. From a young age, songwriting has been my way of processing my internal feelings. I was a bookworm, I would spend hours reading and indulging in other people's stories. I wanted to create a world where I could write my own story.

'Identity Theft' has many meanings to me, and depending on how deep you read into it, you may find new narratives unfolding. There have been many times in my life that I have felt like I haven't belonged in a room, I've felt alienated and confused about who I should be and how I should present myself. There have been times when I've felt controlled by my environment and manipulated by the information that the public have presented to them on a daily basis. I've always been that person who has questioned everything, and I thought the question of Identity and who I am was a question worth raising. Musically the song marches from birth, through childhood, adolescence and adulthood, where the same questions present themselves in different ways. It's defiant, but rhythmic and robotic, like parts of life. I wanted to confidently attack the narrative and come out fighting, as I want people who are struggling with their identity and with being accepted to find strength in it."
  • Brocarde, from Oxfordshire in the UK, made her mark as a paranormal investigator before launching her music career in 2019 with the single "Last Supper." In 2022 she made news for marrying a ghost, which she later exorcised. "Identity Theft" is part of a series of songs she planned for her debut album. Her music, like her other creative pursuits, is a blend of horror and satire.
  • The music video was shot inside Gloucester Prison, known as one of the most haunted sites in the UK. It starts with her delivering her own baby, and then it gets weird.

Brocarde says she encountered the ghosts of notorious gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray, who appeared during a high-energy headbanging scene and joined in from beyond the grave. This unfolded just before midnight, when ghostly prisoners appeared to join in the fun.

"They're not the kind of spirits you want to get on the wrong side of," she says of the Kray twins. "But the fact that they were enjoying my music puts me at ease."
