Songfacts®:

  • "We're Not In Orbit Yet..." is Broken Bells' first single from Into The Blue. The duo, comprising James Mercer of The Shins and producer Danger Mouse, dropped the song on June 29, 2022.
  • "We're Not In Orbit Yet..." is an interstellar journey of sound and sensation. Mercer compares the apprehension and anticipation of a new romance to a rocket trip into space. "It's the wrong time to decelerate," he sings. "We're not in orbit yet."
  • Both this song and the title track are about the great blue yonder. With the distinctive interplanetary pink orb of the album's cover as well, Broken Bells clearly have celestial matters on their mind. "This space theme," Mercer affirmed to The Sun. "It pops up several times because we've been circling around it for so long."
  • "Into the Blue" is Broken Bells' third studio album and their first since they released Disco in 2014. Since then, the group has been relatively inactive, releasing only three standalone singles in the intervening years: "It's That Talk Again" in 2015, "Shelter" in 2018, and "Good Luck" in 2019.
  • The Johnny Chew-directed video features grainy footage of Broken Bells interspersed with eerie sci-fi images.
