Songfacts®:

  • This song finds a brokenhearted Brooks and Dunn spending their nights in a bar. Their lover has walked out on them and they drown their sorrows underneath the neon bar signs.
  • Released as the third single from Brooks & Dunn's debut album, Brand New Man, it became the duo's third consecutive #1 single on the Country chart.
  • Ronnie Dunn wrote the song. It was the only track he wrote solo for Brand New Man.
  • The American dream-pop band Cigarettes After Sex recorded a cover, which they released as a standalone single in December 2018.
  • Brooks & Dunn reworked the song with singer Kacey Musgraves for their 2019 duet album, Reboot. The record features re-recorded versions of a dozen of the duo's songs done as duets with other country music artists. Musgraves gives "Neon Moon" a brooding, EDM-influenced twist.
  • The song went viral on TikTok in 2021. It trended because of the "Neon Moon" dance challenge performed to DJ Noiz's 2021 remix. The dance is a mix of swirling one's hips and simple steps to the lyrics:

When the sun goes down on my side of town
That lonesome feeling comes to my door
And the whole world turns blue
