Songfacts®:

  • Love Yourself: Tear is a concept album exploring themes relating to the pains and sorrows of separation. "We're trying to say that if you, in love, when you're not true to yourself, the love won't last," BTS' leader RM (Kim Namjoon) told Billboard's Chelsea Briggs about the album title. "Because love is complex and we always have the dark sides and the sad sides."

According to the press release the lyrics of this song "clearly represent the theme of the album by realizing that a love that was thought to be fated was actually a lie." The chorus lyrics translate into English as:

Love you so bad, love you so bad
Mold a pretty lie for you
Love it's so mad, love it's so mad
Try to erase myself and make me your doll
  • "Fake Love" made its worldwide television debut when BTS performed the song live at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards on May 20, 2018.
  • RM wrote the song with Love Yourself: Tear producer Pdogg and Hitman Bang, who is the founder and CEO of BTS' management company Big Hit Entertainment.
  • The video notched up 35.9 million views in its first day, making it the third biggest 24-hour music clip debut of all time, behind Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do," which received 43.2 million views in its first day, and PSY's "Gentleman," which garnered 36 million.
  • Love Yourself: Tear debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the first ever K-pop album to top the chart. It was also the first primarily foreign-language longplayer to reach the summit in over 12 years. The previous one to do so was classical crossover vocal quartet Il Divo's Ancora, which reached the peak position in February 2006.
  • When South Korea eliminated Germany with a 2-0 victory in the 2018 World Cup, helping ensure Mexico would make it to the next round. To show their appreciation, Mexican soccer fans downloaded this song enough time to send it up 31 spots on the iTunes chart.
