Songfacts®:

  • "FYA" is a track from BTS' Arirang album, the septet's first release since they went on hiatus for the members to complete their military service. The title is an acronym standing for "Fire Your Ass," or, in the more family-friendly reading that BTS have playfully endorsed, "Fuel Your Ambition." The double meaning is consistent with the song's central theme of being lit, fired up, and unstoppable.
  • "FYA" is a high-energy Jersey club track built on metaphors and analogies about fire, being lit, burning bright, and incinerating anything in the way. BTS express everything that makes them fiery: the competitive instinct, the hunger that has not dimmed, and the sheer physical intensity of being seven people moving together at full force. Sequenced fourth after "Body To Body," "Hooligan" and "Aliens," "FYA" extends the album's opening run of high-energy assertiveness before Arirang pivots toward more introspective territory. Where "Hooligan" announces the comeback with swagger, "FYA" burns the invitation.
  • The song was produced by Diplo, Flume, and NITTI.

Diplo (Thomas Wesley Pentz) is the American DJ and producer behind Major Lazer, and one of the most genre-fluid hitmakers in contemporary pop. His credits include songs for Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, and Bad Bunny. He produced five tracks on Arirang, more than any other external collaborator.

Flume (Harley Streten) is an Australian electronic producer known for his maximalist, hyper-detailed production style. His presence on "FYA" alongside Diplo creates one of the most production-forward pairings on Arirang.

NITTI (Richard Mears) is an American producer with deep hip-hop roots, known for his work with Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and DJ Snake. He co-wrote Bad Bunny and Diplo's 2018 single "200 MPH" from Bad Bunny's X 100PRE, which won a Latin Grammy.
  • Diplo, Flume, and NITTI built "FYA" on the high-speed chassis of Jersey club, a genre born in Newark, New Jersey, that thrives on frenetic beats and a kind of joyful aggression. Other K-Pop songs with a Jersey club beat include New Jeans' "Super Shy" and BlackPink's "Jump." That one was also produced by Diplo.
  • BTS members RM, Suga, and J-Hope wrote the song with Diplo, Flume, NITTI, JPEGMAFIA, Pdogg, and Kirsten Spencer. JPEGMAFIA is a Baltimore-born rapper and producer known for a series of experimental hip-hop albums and his work on Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign's Vultures 1. He lends the track an additional layer of abrasive, left-field hip-hop sensibility.
