Songfacts®:

  • BTS planned their Map of the Soul Tour for summer 2020, but it was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. With time on their hands, the boy band started working on their fifth Korean-language studio album. Be was officially announced on September 27, 2020, with the group's record stating that the album "imparts a message of healing to the world by declaring, 'Even in the face of this new normality, our life goes on.'"
  • Being separated from ARMY during the pandemic had a big impact on Be. This alternative hip-hop track offers comfort and encouragement to BTS' fans in a difficult time.

Like an echo in the forest
The day will come back around
    As if nothing happened
    Yeah, life goes on

The song is the opening track of BE and serves as its mission statement of reflecting the coranavirus-era.
  • BTS member Jungkook directed the music video. It was his first time behind the camera on one of his group's clips. The visual sees BTS going through their lockdown routine as we see them laze around in their dorm, enjoy a campfire sing-a-long, watch recordings of themselves, and perform the song in an empty stadium under a monochrome filter. "We wanted to show this sensibility, this emotional side," Jungkook shared during a press conference. "Our tour was canceled because of COVID-19 and we were not able to meet ARMY. I wanted to express this regret, how unfortunate I feel this situation is."
  • Jungkook's directorial talents aren't anything new to ARMY. He's directed and edited plenty of short clips as part of their Golden Closet Film productions that show BTS traveling all over the world.
  • This is the first ever Hot 100 #1 to be sung predominantly in Korean. BTS' previous two chart toppers - "Dynamite" and "Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat) BTS Remix" - have English lyrics.
  • When "Life Goes On" hit #1 on the Hot 100 December 5, 2020, it was the first time since the German-language Falco song "Rock Me Amadeus" in 1986 that a song with lyrics mostly in a language other than English or Spanish topped the chart.
