  • A "mic drop" is the gesture of intentionally dropping one's microphone at the end of a performance or speech after a triumphant performance to signal victory. This boastful jam was recorded by BTS for their 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her. It finds the Korean boy band trumpeting the results of their hard work such as winning music awards.
  • BTS member RM revealed that the song was inspired by former US president Barack Obama's mic drop at the 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner, adding, "It's a song in which listeners can feel BTS' tremendous swag."
  • Following BTS' US TV debut at the American Music Awards on November 19, 2017, the K-pop boy band released a new remix of the song produced by electronic DJ Steve Aoki and featuring a guest verse from Brooklyn rapper Desiigner. BTS performed the remix version of the song on American talk shows The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, aired in late November 2017.
  • "MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)" topped the US iTunes Top Songs chart, making BTS the first K-pop group to accomplish the feat and the second K-Pop act following "Gangnam Style" singer PSY. BTS also beat their own record for the highest-charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a K-pop group, when the song debuted at #28 on the chart dated December 16, 2017. It marked the South Korean boy band's first top 40 Hot 100 entry and the first for any K-pop group.
