Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track and first single by Welsh heavy metal band Bullet For My Valentine from their fourth album. The song was debuted live on October 22, 2012 as part of BBC Radio 1's Rock Week and it was released worldwide a week later across all digital providers apart from in the UK where it was released on November 25, 2012.
  • Frontman Matt Tuck explained the background to the tune to Kerrang! "I wanted to write a song that built tension. I wanted it to get adrenaline going," he said. "The title more or less sums what it's all about and I just wanted to build up anxiety, then release it in the chorus. But I wanted it to be positive, too. It's not about fu--ing s--t up and fighting, it's about releasing negative energy."
  • The song didn't stem from any particular incident, rather Tuck had the title in his head for ages and as he told Kerrang! "it wouldn't go away." He added: "We wrote the song instrumentally and then, when I got to the chorus, I just knew it was right for the 'Temper, Temper' lyric I had in my head. As soon as we tried it, it sounded fu--ing dope."
  • Speaking to Cameron Edney of Australia's Scene magazine, Matt Tuck explained the lyrical themes covered on album: "Temper Temper is about losing touch with each other and losing touch with reality in the band, taking things for granted," he said.

"There was a part of the last touring cycle where, for the first time in the 20 years that we've known each other, we started to dislike each other a little bit and weren't hanging out together," he continued. "That's why the album is called 'Temper Temper'. That's why a lot of the songs are called what they are, and the lyrical content reflects those times. This album is the most personal album I've ever written. It was a weird time for us."
  • The Temper Temper album was a huge hit worldwide for the band, charting at #13 in America, as well as #11 in the UK, plus Top 10 placings in Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.
