Songfacts®:

  • "Young Hearts Run Free" was written by Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer David Crawford at a time when Candi Staton was being forced to endure an abusive marriage to her third husband, Tyrone Davis' former promoter. This song about marital grief was inspired by the stories that Candi told him about her difficult life with her husband. Staton recalled: "We would sit down and I would tell him the horrors I was going through in the marriage I was trying to get out of. I would bring David incidents, and little did I know he was making mental notes and writing all that stuff down." (courtesy: candi-staton.com)
  • In 1999 a re-recorded version peaked at #29 in the UK.
  • Staton's abusive ex-husband had threatened her life during a harrowing incident in Las Vegas, holding her over a balcony railing. This traumatic experience profoundly influenced the song's message.

"I laugh about it sometimes - that's my life story in three minutes," Staton told Uncut magazine. "I was with a guy that had threatened my life, he threatened my mother's life, if I ever left him. People that don't understand that say, 'Why you've been married so many times?' I had to, I didn't want to be alone, but I couldn't find the kind of man I wanted. And when I got him, he turned out to be a monster."
  • Today "Young Hearts Run Free" is recognized as both a disco classic and an anthem of resilience. The song's themes of self-acceptance and breaking free from societal expectations has resonated for many people from marginalized communities who faced discrimination and emotional entrapment. It's also found feminist interpretations, advocating for women to prioritize their independence over societal pressures tied to marriage and traditional roles.
  • Several artists have recorded their own versions of "Young Hearts Run Free." They include:

Featured on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, this house music version became one of Mazelle's signature hits, peaking at #20 in the UK.

  • Michele from TnI understand why Candi feels it is difficult to leave when a child is involved. It adds a whole additional layer to consider.
The song is SO inspirational! Thank you Candi.
  • Sandy from FlThis is a great, inspiring song. I had a feeling it was based on real life, even before I read the bio. The lyrics are just too hard-hitting, not to be. Reminds me of my first (bad) marriage. But I don't understand why Candi Staton was "trying" to get out of an abusive marriage. Unless you're being physically held, you walk away. No "trying" involved.
