  • Jepsen's breakthrough single "Call Me Maybe" gained initial publicity after Justin Bieber tweeted that it, "is possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard." As a result of the ensuing international attention, Carly Rae got signed by School Boy Records, the label run by Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun. The Canadian songstress went on to tour with the teen idol and because of their connection, he came on board as her duet partner for this ballad. "It was a song that him and Toby Gad brought to the table and asked [me to record]," she recalled to MTV News. "Actually, on my first introduction of Bieber, he was like, 'Do you wanna sing this song?' I said, 'Yes!' I love that track as well, so it was exciting."
  • When asked to describe the track by MTV News, Jepsen said: "It's kind of like a friendship ballad, it's kind of charming and it's sweet and a little bit of a different flavor to what I have on my album too."
  • Jepsen told MTV News about the recording of the song: "It was really exciting," she recalled, "I had actually just flown into LA for the first time to meet Scooter and my whole team at School Boy Records and Interscope and I was pretty nervous to meet Justin.

He was just a regular guy, so nice, so talented but at the same time really humble about it and played me some songs from his record Believe and one of the tunes was the song Beautiful and he'd written it with a good friend and producer that we both know, named Tony Gad.

I remember just thinking 'wow, this is such a different flavour," she continued, "that I'd ever think of doing, it's really cool' and he asked me if I'd like to sing on it. Of course, I was very excited to do that, and we did it that night.

I was going to go to bed but they were like 'why don't you just jump into the studio tonight and finish the song right now?' So, fifteen minutes later I was in the vocal booth."
