Songfacts®:

  • This is a cover of Randy Travis' hit from his second album, Always and Forever. Travis' original version topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart for two weeks in 1988 and won him an American Music Award for Favorite Country Single.
  • Underwood lists on her official bio, Always and Forever, along with Martina McBride's Greatest Hits and the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor as her 3 favorite albums.
  • Underwood explained to msn.com why she chose this song: "I knew I wanted to do a cover, and I think it's a lot easier to do a song when you switch the gender. Then nobody can compare it to the original - it's just blatantly so different that you can't compare and say, 'Oh, this one isn't as good.' But then I couldn't find any that I wanted to do, and I was going through my iTunes one day and just found this one. I've always loved the song, it's got such a great melody, and I felt it was one that a female could definitely pull off."

She added, "For some reason, you always expect the guy to be the one that leaves and then comes back and asks to be forgiven or whatever. I don't think there are too many songs where the female screws up and asks the guy to take her back, so I thought it would be good to put that out there."
  • A duet version between Underwood and Randy Travis jumped into the Top 10 of the Hot 100, after the pair performed the song on American Idol. This gave Travis his biggest ever hit, the Country singer's previous best chart placing being the #31 peak of "Three Wooden Crosses" in 2003.
  • When this reached the Top 10 of the Hot Country Songs chart, Randy Travis became the first artist for 15 years to send a title into the Top 10 twice. Dolly Parton was the previous artist to achieve the same feat when her original of "I Will Always Love You" topped the county chart in 1974 and her 1982 re-recording also reached peak position.
  • The Underwood/Travis duet won Best Country Collaboration With Vocals at the 2010 Grammy Awards.

  • Camille from Toronto, OhCarrie Underwood's version is excellent, as is the version by Randy Travis. They both have such incredible voices. In the video, Carrie sings the song at the Grand Ole Opry, and is genuinely surprised when Randy Travis comes out on stage as she completes the song. She shows such sincerity speaking with him, it truly shows why she's such a star.
  • Slater from Yuma, AzIts a great song for the simple fact that everyone can relate to it. There are probably a hundred Courtneys out there. Hang in there Courtney whats ment to be is ment to be.

i like the Randy Travis version too
  • Courtney from Salt Lake City, UtI can totally relate to this. I screwed up things with my soul mate four years ago. He has been bitter towards me ever sense. I have tried to get him to come back to me for years now. I just found out he is getting married in a month. I made the biggest mistake of my life and I am sure he is thinking, "I told you so."
