Songfacts®:

  • "Johanna" was written by Steven Sondheim for his musical cum opera Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. Although it was cut from the original Broadway production, it appears in the 2007 US film release which features Johnny Depp in the title role.

"Johanna" might be construed as a love song, but it is sung to Johanna by the wicked Judge Turpin, who having ordered the transportation of her father, rapes her mother then makes Johanna his ward before turning his unwanted attentions to her. >>>
