Songfacts®:

  • This is a rather off-beat duet from a rather off-beat musical, Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. At this point, Todd has Judge Turpin in his chair, the man who transported him to Australia, raped his wife - driving her to suicide - and made Todd's daughter his ward. Turpin is now planning to marry Johanna. As Todd sings and the Judge joins in, he is lulled him into a false sense of security, but just as Todd is about to slit the man's throat, his plans are thwarted by his former shipmate Anthony who bursts into his shop and blurts out the news about the forthcoming marriage, alerting the Judge to Todd's deception, if not to his actual plans. >>>
