Songfacts®:

  • Cat Stevens surprised his fans with this strangely titled techno-pop instrumental. He explained to Uncut magazine in 2014: "In the '70s, there was an article that made me furious, but also made me laugh, called 'Was God An Astronaut?' The whole premise of putting God into a space rocket was so outrageous I just decided to have a go and wrote that song."
  • This is not to be confused with Stevens' other canine-titled cut, his 1966 UK hit "I Love My Dog."
  • About seven months after the Izitso album was released, Cat Stevens converted to Islam and took the name Yusuf Islam. He released another album as Cat Stevens in 1978, but then stopped making pop music until 2006, when he issued the album An Other Cup under the name Yusuf.

  • David Harvey from AustraliaYusuf returned in 2006 with his first Western pop album since 1978 with "An Other Cup" and he has since returned fully to music. I vividly remember this happening that year - 2006 - and I was 17 at the time.
