  • Train imagery was once widespread in traditional spirituals, with the believer getting on board the locomotive bound for heaven. However, Chelsea Wolfe's modern take on the spiritual journey has a different destination in mind.

    Now I'm on this train
    I hear it rollin' on
I'm deranged for rock 'n' roll

Wolfe goes on to say she did catch the gospel train in her younger days, but now it takes her into Mother Nature's arms.

All these years have made me strong
Three baptisms for this soiled dove

She explained to Kerrang: "A 'soiled dove' is a quite derogatory Victorian name for a prostitute. I experimented with two different religions and I was baptized twice during school. As I've gotten older, I've left traditional Christianity behind, as I feel like nature is my church. I started following a more pagan path and sort of performed my own natural baptism in a river."
