Songfacts®:

  • "The Good Things" is the 12th track on Cherry Poppin' Daddies concept album Susquehanna. Since the album tells a progressive narrative, this is the song that resolves the former strife in life and love expressed by earlier songs. In lead singer Steve Perry's own description, "This is the song where everything has been worked through, and has returned to the beginning. After the vignettes of the past, the guilt, the loneliness, the desire for self-destruction, and then the irrational decision to keep on going, there is a kind of closure; the end of the psychic journey has arrived in acceptance. The relationship from the beginning has been returned to, and the character has achieved a bittersweet grace with its failure. He decides to remember only the good things."
  • If the name of this album sounds Native American, that's because it's named after the Susquehanna River, which runs near where Steve Perry grew up.
  • Steve Perry states in the press release for Susquehanna that he intended each song on the album to come across as a chapter in a modernist novel. He compares this to James Joyce's Ulysses when describing what effect he was going for.
