Songfacts®:

  • During this uptempo self-empowerment song, Chloe and Halle Bailey sing of being completely unapologetic in who they are and not getting dragged down by how others perceive them.

    So forgive me, forgive me
I been goin' too hard in your city
So forgive me 'cause I'm not teary
Best believe I'll move onto better things

Chloe told CBS News that "Forgive Me" defines the entire Ungodly Hour album. "We're being unapologetically ourselves, and if anyone can't accept that, we hope they can forgive us. Because we're still going to live our best lives and continue being the best version of ourselves, while making mistakes along the way," she said.
  • Chloe and Halle wrote the tune with frequent Kendrick Lamar collaborator Sounwave and songwriter Nija Charles (Chris Brown featuring Drake's "No Guidance," Lady Gaga featuring Ariana Grande's "Rain On Me"). Sounwave supplied the bass-filled beat with hip-hop producer Jake One.
  • Chloe told Apple Music that when she and her sister were in the studio with Nija and Sounwave, her self-worth had just taken a battering from a guy who had picked someone else over her. She explained that the incident upset her because it hadn't been dealt with in an honest manner.

"I went in the booth and laid down some melodies, and some of the words came in, and then Halle went in and she sang 'forgive me,' and I thought that was so strong and powerful, and Nija laid down some melodies," Chloe recalled. "We kind of constructed it as a puzzle in a way. It felt so good - it felt like we were taking our power back, like, 'Forgive me for not caring and giving you that energy to control me and make me sad.'"
  • Chloe x Halle live-debuted "Forgive Me" on June 29, 2020 at the BET Awards 2020. The sisters wore black latex outfits during their performance, similar to those on their Ungodly Hour album cover.
