Songfacts®:

  • This story of a 10-year-old boy taking care of the family while his soldier father is away serving his country was written by Wicks and Michael Mobley. Wicks explained on his MySpace site why this "is a very special song" to him. He blogged: "As a songwriter I try to write from a real life point of view what 'REAL' people actually experience everyday throughout their day. I come from a place as a songwriter to write about real emotions that we have all experienced at some point in our lives. Whether it be a broken heart, a first love, a dream, or anything that has made someone laugh, cry, or just think!
Man of the House is special. A lot of songs have been written about the war. We all know that. But what hasn't been done and sometimes is overlooked or forgotten is how we deal with the war "Back Home."
I have met and talked to many, many families that are desperately waiting for their loved one to come home from over seas. These brave families are the ones waiting for the ones that are fighting for our freedom! I wanted to write a song that acknowledge these very families and the children that wait for their mothers and fathers to come back home to be 'MOM' and 'DAD' again.
Man of the House is about a young boy who takes care of his mother and sister Daisy while his dad is fighting the war in a place far away from home. It is the Love and Strength of this family that gets them through the day. It is Bobby the young boy in the song that keeps his mother and sister strong till dad returns home. It's the moments when Bobby and his sister and mom get to talk to dad over the phone that keep them pushing forward not only for their family but for their country!
Man of the House is an example of what families everyday in this country go through because of war. Man of the House is about a little boy named Bobby that shares the same story with many other kids in this country that just plain miss their DAD!"
