Songfacts®:

  • This song was inspired by the overwhelming beauty frontman Greg Gonzalez witnessed as he watched a sunset that went on for hours and hours.
  • Cigarettes After Sex had just been playing a summer festival in Latvia in 2016; the crowd had gone crazy for their set and they were all on a high. The band walked over to a secluded beach that was part of the festival and sat down to bask in an endless sunset.

Said Gonzalez to Apple Music: "It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. And I remember thinking to myself, 'This is where I should be right now. This is the place I'm kind of meant to be.' It was this moment of clarity, and I put it in the chorus of 'Heavenly.'"
  • As Gonzalez worked on the track, he turned the feeling he sings of in the chorus into something more about intimacy and romance. The singer told Paper Mag: "It's a really intimate song; the lyrics are like words might whisper to someone. This is one that started off being about a certain feeling, then transition into being about an actual person."
