  • CMAT is the stage name of Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, an Irish singer-songwriter whose country-pop theatrics blend humor, heartbreak, and heavy doses of internet culture. The moniker is simply an acronym of her full name.
  • She grew up around Dublin and Dunboyne in County Meath and says she knew as early as age 9 that pop stardom was the plan. "I was always just like, yeah, I'm going to be famous... I was always writing songs," she told Mojo magazine.

Her mother worked as a "nurse-slash-carer," and most of her siblings followed similar practical paths. CMAT likes to joke she was the only one in the house who could sing, dance, or even wanted to.
  • From a young age CMAT was, by her own description, delusionally confident in a classic pop-star way. "I was 8 years old and I was like, 'I'm going to be a popstar, you have to bring me to Los Angeles so I can audition for Disney,'" she told Metal Magazine. But the same big personality made her an outsider in secondary school: "I spent six or seven years in my bedroom because I couldn't find anyone to get along with."
  • Her bedroom became her creative zone. CMAT was a self-confessed music obsessive, running blogs, writing Bombay Bicycle Club fan fiction, and living on band forums while her peers were out socializing.
  • She briefly tried university life, enrolling in an Irish studies degree at Trinity College Dublin, working retail shifts at Debenhams and dealing with her parents' breakup at the same time. After six months CMAT suffered what she called a "complete mental breakdown," and she dropped out.
  • Her first attempt at a music career came with the Manchester-based indie duo Bad Sea, but after moving there to give it a shot, she found the project stalled creatively. The real pivot came in an unlikely place: a fan focus group where CMAT reviewed unreleased music by Charli XCX. Charli was in the room and was struck by CMAT's sharp, fearless critiques. After the session, Charli pulled her aside and told her to go back to Dublin and take songwriting seriously.
  • Charli's encouragement steered CMAT toward her natural mode: kitchen-sink storytelling and domestic melodrama delivered with country-pop flair. "My sensibilities are towards the kitchen sink," she told Mojo, explaining the appeal of the genre. "Country music makes small things really big and big things really small."

Critics who say all country songs sound the same miss the point, she says. "The more everyday you go, the more laser-focused you can get on the topic."
  • Her first two albums - If My Wife New I'd Be Dead and Crazymad, For Me - both hit #1 in Ireland, with the latter earning an Ivors nomination. The success helped fuel her running joke that she might actually be "Ireland's best pop songwriter."
  • Her breakout single, "Take A Sexy Picture of Me," kicked off a TikTok dance craze dubbed the "Woke Macarena," underscoring how her songs, and their offbeat visuals, slide effortlessly into meme culture and viral choreography.
  • CMAT is openly bisexual, telling NME she makes music "for the gays and the girls."
