Songfacts®:

  • "Take A Sexy Picture Of Me" finds Irish alt-pop artist CMAT (real name Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson) wrestling with the universal desire to feel attractive, filtered through her signature blend of irony, wit, and biting honesty. The track explores the gap between how we want to be seen and how we actually see ourselves, using playful lyrics to unpick the pressure to appear "commercially attractive" in a world obsessed with appearances.

"With the internet, every woman is now in the public eye," CMAT said. "And no matter who you are, or what you look like, somebody will take umbrage with the fact that you even exist, and there's no escaping it. 'Take a Sexy Picture of Me' was born out of that, because I held back for so long; not out of frustration or sadness for myself, because I AM in the public eye, but I realized it's actually like this for every woman. It's all women, all the time."
  • CMAT was inspired to write the song after receiving fat-shaming comments online following her performance at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Luton in 2024. Speaking to Radio 1's Jack Saunders, she said:

"Everyone is constantly being judged on whether or not they're commercially attractive and where they fall within these really weird goal posts. I just was annoyed, and I wanted to write a song about being annoyed about it."
  • Despite the humorous tone, CMAT described "Take A Sexy Picture Of Me" as "the saddest song I've ever written."
  • The song was produced by Oli Deakin, a British songwriter and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Deakin is known for his work with Elanor Moss, Wandering Hearts and Swimming Bell, and he also records his own music under the name Lowpines.
  • The song went viral on TikTok thanks to a dance trend known as the "Woke Macarena." The routine was choreographed by influencer Sam Morris, who uploaded it shortly after the single dropped in May 2025.

CMAT was charmed. "Love u so much," she told Morris on TikTok. "This was such a very kind thing of u to do. I was at the club the other night and more than one person came up to me and silently did the dance. It was so fun and lovely! I feel like a very special girl thanks to u."
  • The "Woke Macarena" playfully nods to the iconic 1996 dance craze attached to Los Del Rio's hit "Macarena," which became a global phenomenon.
  • CMAT made her US television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 9, 2025, performing "Take A Sexy Picture Of Me". She was joined by her band, who were all decked out in matching knit vests and brown miniskirts.
