As I Love You

Album: The Unpublished Cole Porter (1913)

Songfacts®:

  • Cole Porter graduated from Yale in 1913, the same year he wrote "As I Love You," the first of his "list songs." This is a catalogue of the girls who won his heart. From what we know of Porter from reliable sources, including well researched biographies, this list of lovers was entirely fictional. In December 1919, he married Linda Thomas, a wealthy divorcée some eight years his senior, but it was a lavender marriage. It remains to be seen if, like his contemporary Noël Coward, Porter was entirely homosexual. Though his marriage was childless, Linda suffered a miscarriage; it was her only pregnancy.

Though "As I Love You" is a fair effort, it was written very early in Porter's career and is remembered as a significant milestone rather than for its merits. >>>
